Agrichemical standards reviewed

New standards have been introduced to the industry, including handling and use of agrichemicals such as pesticides and veterinary medicines.

New Zealand Agrichemical Education Trust (NZAET) oversees Growsafe. Growsafe’s aim is ‘To facilitate the approved and safe use of agrichemicals in New Zealand consistent with sustainable land management and environmental protection through advocacy and education.’

The first revision in nearly 20 years was published in August 2021 as changes in the regulatory environment relating to hazardous substances in December 2017 made a review necessary. This brought new standards to the industry, including handling and use of agrichemicals such as pesticides and veterinary medicines. NZS 8409:2021 is the New Zealand Standard for the Management of Agrichemicals. The guideline extends into guidance for new technologies such as automated sprayers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones. Three main agrichemicals used are; insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Agriculture primarily uses herbicides, animal remedies and, in the dairy sector, dairy detergents.

“The new standard also includes a new requirement to undertake an on-site risk assessment immediately prior to any spraying and more detailed requirements for a spray plan, notification of affected parties and signage to provide better communication of spraying activities.”

“Both agrichemical contractors and farmers alike need to get up to speed with the new standard’s changes and requirements.” Dean Bowden, a Growsafe trainer says.

The use of organophosphates is not banned by the new standard, but Dean expects this will happen eventually because many overseas markets are demanding these chemicals not be used on anything consumed.
